How to Get Through 2025

As the new year began, I found myself on the phone with a friend. We exchanged warm wishes for the year ahead, but our conversation quickly turned to an unexpected theme: fatigue. Despite having enjoyed restful New Year’s breaks, we both admitted to feeling more like we were bracing ourselves to get through 2025 rather than charging into it with excitement.

It got me thinking about how we can shift this mindset. Instead of rigidly planning every detail, maybe the key lies in taking a step back, reassessing, and reconfiguring the "now."

This idea led me to reflect on how we can move from merely reacting to owning the present moment. Today, I want to share a few simple questions that might help you approach 2025 with intention and clarity. These questions can serve as a pause point when something lands on your to-do list, inbox, or comes up in a meeting. Before you take something on, take a moment to consider …

1. Does this feel good for me?

Sometimes, it’s okay to say no. If a task or request doesn’t align with your well-being, it’s worth considering whether it’s something you can pass on or delegate. A polite "thank you, but this isn’t for me" can leave space for the things that are more important for you and/or the world.

2. Is this truly necessary?

Take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Does this task or project contribute meaningfully? Does it bring value or progress to you or others? Sometimes, less really is more.

3. Is this important right now?

Many demands feel urgent, but are they truly? Often, people’s requests are more about them wanting to check something off their own to-do-list. Pause and evaluate: Does this need immediate attention, or can it wait?

4. If not now, when?

Consider whether there’s a better time to address this. Would you handle it more effectively after completing other tasks or during a quieter period? Timing can make all the difference in how well something gets done.

5. How long? How much?

When you decide to take something on, set clear boundaries. Determine how much time, energy, and focus you’re willing to invest. For example, “I will dedicate two hours to this task” or “I’ll commit 20% of my energy to this project.” This approach keeps you in control.

By pausing to ask these questions, you might find yourself making choices that bring more ease and joy to your year rather than adding to the overwhelm. 2025 doesn’t have to feel like an endless slog. With intentional pauses and thoughtful actions, it can become a year of growth, clarity, and ownership of the present moment.
